La Universidad de Gante informó que uno de sus miembros de personal había recibido una notificación sobre el inicio de una “investigación disciplinaria preliminar” y que había sido suspendido como medida de precaución.

Jason Arday, a 41-year-old professor at the University of Cambridge, died by suicide less than a month ago, according to the World Bullying Without Borders Organization. The organization says Arday had resigned from his position at the prestigious British university after being affected by a plagiarism allegation that it attributes to Nathan Cofnas, then an academic at Cambridge.
The allegation has not, so far, resulted in civil or criminal court proceedings holding anyone responsible for Arday’s death. Bullying Without Borders said the case highlights the risks of what it described as “social execution” driven by false or misleading information circulated online and amplified by social media and, potentially, artificial intelligence tools.
Cofnas, who describes himself as a “racial realist”, accused Arday, who was Black, of plagiarism and questioned some of his academic achievements. Cofnas lost his position at Cambridge in 2024 following controversy over remarks about the presence of Black people in high-profile positions outside sports and entertainment.
Cofnas said on X on Thursday that he was being investigated by Ghent University for “discriminating against Arday” and that he would “almost certainly be dismissed”.
Ghent University said a member of its staff had been notified that a “preliminary disciplinary investigation” had been opened and had been suspended as a precautionary measure.
In a statement concerning Arday’s death, Ghent University rector Petra De Sutter and vice-rector Herwig Reynaert said the institution was taking “very seriously” recent public statements by a postdoctoral researcher concerning the case and had taken “appropriate measures”.
The university said it upholds “respect for human dignity” and opposes “discrimination, hatred and racism”.
