The first note, regarded by investigators as apparently credible, demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin in exchange for Nancy Guthrie's release. The second claimed that she had died shortly after being abducted from her home near Tucson six months ago.
The Pima County Sheriff's Office said it could not confirm that claim and that the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities released both notes on Friday and appealed for public assistance, saying the author's distinctive linguistic patterns could be recognized by someone who knows them.
Investigators believe Nancy Guthrie, who was 84 when she was last seen on Jan. 31, was taken from her home against her will. No motive has been disclosed and no arrests have been made.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the notes were addressed to Savannah Guthrie and her family and were sent to a local television station in Tucson shortly after Nancy Guthrie disappeared.

The first note, received on Feb. 2, said Nancy Guthrie was being held captive and demanded an initial ransom of $4 million in Bitcoin, increasing to $6 million if payment was not made by the stated deadline. It warned that the victim would be killed if the ransom was not paid.
Nancy Guthrie, who required daily medication, disappeared after relatives left her at her home on Jan. 31. She remains missing.
