Los equipos de rescate continuaban revisando los escombros en distintos puntos de la zona afectada, entre ellos una fábrica de papel en la ciudad de Yatsushiro, donde el colapso de una chimenea dejó a dos trabajadores en paro cardíaco, quienes fueron trasladados a un hospital. Otras nueve personas permanecían desaparecidas.
El terremoto provocó además una explosión en un centro comercial Aeon, que alberga alrededor de 200 establecimientos. Imágenes difundidas desde el lugar mostraban la parte superior del edificio principal gravemente dañada y parcialmente derrumbada. Dos mujeres de aproximadamente 20 años fallecieron en el lugar.
Un portavoz de Aeon informó que clientes y empleados fueron evacuados inmediatamente después del sismo inicial y señaló que el origen de la explosión seguía bajo investigación. Un funcionario gubernamental indicó al Consorcio Internacional de Periodistas JMH que el complejo había reportado una fuga de gas, aunque la causa exacta aún no había sido determinada.

The updated death toll was confirmed to the JMH International Consortium of Journalists by official authorities only minutes ago.
Rescue teams continued searching through debris at several locations, including a paper mill in the city of Yatsushiro, where the collapse of a chimney left two workers in cardiac arrest. They were taken to hospital, while nine other people remained missing.
The earthquake also triggered an explosion at an Aeon shopping mall, which houses about 200 stores. Images from the scene showed the upper section of the main building heavily damaged and partially collapsed. Two women in their twenties were confirmed dead at the site.
An Aeon spokesperson said customers and employees had been evacuated immediately after the initial quake and that the cause of the explosion remained under investigation. A government official told the JMH International Consortium of Journalists that the complex had reported a gas leak, although the exact cause had not yet been determined.
Japan's Ministry of Defense deployed 3,600 personnel and dispatched 20 aircraft to support rescue operations and assess damage from the air. Emergency crews from neighboring prefectures arrived in the affected areas later that evening.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that the hardest-hit regions could experience additional strong earthquakes and landslides for about a week because the shallow-focus quake had increased seismic activity in the area.
