El ministro de Educación de India, Dharmendra Pradhan, presentó su renuncia tras una semana de manifestaciones masivas encabezadas por el movimiento estudiantil conocido como “las cucarachas”, en lo que sus dirigentes calificaron como la primera gran victoria de la juventud contra el Gobierno de Narendra Modi.

“Dada la situación surgida en Jantar Mantar y en todo el país, y para evitar que fuerzas antinacionales se aprovechen de ella, he enviado mi carta de renuncia al primer ministro”, escribió Pradhan en un comunicado.

Modi, quien lleva 12 años en el poder, ha construido una imagen de liderazgo firme y ha sostenido que sus ministros no deben ceder ante la presión pública. La renuncia de Pradhan constituye, según los organizadores, el primer caso en que una movilización juvenil de alcance nacional obliga a dimitir a uno de los ministros más leales al primer ministro.

Las protestas fueron organizadas por el recién creado partido político juvenil Cockroach Janata (CJP), que durante esta semana amplió su convocatoria hasta convertirse en un movimiento nacional de disidencia juvenil.

“Lo hemos logrado”, declararon voceros de “las cucarachas” ante manifestantes que coreaban consignas como “victoria para la India” y “viva la revolución”.

El comunicado del movimiento concluyó con una advertencia: “Recuerden: no se metan con las cucarachas”.

India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned after a week of mass demonstrations led by the youth movement known as “the Cockroaches”, in what its leaders described as the first major victory for young protesters against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

“Given the situation that has arisen at Jantar Mantar and across the country, and to prevent anti-national forces from taking advantage of it, I have sent my resignation letter to the prime minister,” Pradhan said in a statement.

Modi, who has been in power for 12 years, has cultivated an image of strong leadership and has maintained that his ministers should not yield to public pressure. Pradhan’s resignation was described by the organizers as the first instance in which a nationwide youth uprising has forced one of the prime minister’s most loyal ministers to step down.

The protests were organized by the newly formed youth political party Cockroach Janata (CJP), which this week expanded its campaign into a nationwide movement of youth dissent.

“We have done it,” representatives of the “Cockroaches” said as protesters chanted slogans including “victory for India” and “long live the revolution”.

The movement’s statement ended with a warning: “Remember: don’t mess with the Cockroaches.”
