Global financial markets fell sharply on Wednesday after Brent crude oil climbed above $100 a barrel, raising investor concerns that higher energy prices could fuel inflation and weigh on global economic growth.

Global financial markets fell sharply on Wednesday after Brent crude oil climbed above $100 a barrel, raising investor concerns that higher energy prices could fuel inflation and weigh on global economic growth.

The S&P 500 was down 1.3%, heading for its second consecutive weekly decline, a streak not seen since March. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 537 points, or 1%, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.2% at 12:50 p.m. ET.

Equities came under pressure as rising oil prices increased business costs and reduced consumers' purchasing power. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose 7.1% to $100.74 per barrel.

Only a few weeks ago, Brent had fallen below $72 a barrel, returning to levels seen before the outbreak of the conflict between the United States and Iran, amid expectations that oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would fully normalize.

Analysts said crude prices remaining above $100 a barrel could complicate the recent easing of inflation, increasing the likelihood that the U.S. Federal Reserve and other central banks will keep interest rates higher for longer or tighten monetary policy further, potentially slowing economic growth and weighing on equity markets.

Oil prices surge due to the new conflict in the Strait of Hormuz.

WALL STREET, July 13 — JMH International Journalists Consortium “The week kicks off with oil back in the spotlight following the escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran over the weekend. The rise in crude prices and heightened tension surrounding the Strait of Hormuz could once again boost local oil and gas companies, although they also add a degree of volatility to the market,” noted Portfolio Personal de Inversiones (PPI). Today, the price of Brent crude is climbing 9.3%, trading at $83.14 per barrel. Reproduction permitted with attribution of the source. JMH International Journalists Consortium
