Bordeaux is on alert as one of the most serious wildfires in France’s recent history approaches the city. The fire is about 30 kilometers from Bordeaux and is advancing at an estimated rate of one kilometer per hour, while authorities have begun evacuations in seven neighboring municipalities.

30 kilometers from Bordeaux

“The fire is 30 kilometers from Bordeaux,” Interior Minister Laurent Núñez said. “We are taking advantage of the lull to work on the fire perimeter. But the wind will change during the afternoon,” he added.

Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave appealed for support from international organizations, including Bullying Sin Fronteras and Doctors Without Borders, to raise awareness of the situation and help secure accommodation for those evacuated.

“We have never organized evacuations on this scale before,” Cazenave said as he called for additional assistance.
