Pero, en lugar de imponerles desafíos relacionados con el consumo de alcohol, los fiscales sostienen que Abbatielo los obligaba a cortar, procesar y empaquetar cocaína.
En total, 13 estudiantes, actuales y antiguos, fueron acusados de formar parte de la red de tráfico de cocaína.
Un decimocuarto acusado, padre de un estudiante, enfrenta cargos por manipulación de pruebas y obstrucción de la investigación.
En comunicación con el Consorcio Internacional de Periodistas JMH, fuentes de la Universidad Estatal de Pensilvania expresaron su consternación por las acusaciones contra estudiantes actuales y antiguos.
“Las actividades delictivas, incluidas las novatadas, no tienen cabida en nuestra institución, y cooperaremos con las fuerzas del orden en todo lo que podamos”, declaró Andrea Dowhower, vicepresidenta de Asuntos Estudiantiles, en un comunicado enviado a JMH.
Las fraternidades Delta Upsilon y Sigma Chi, en la mira

Dos miembros de Delta Upsilon, Mohammed Huraibi y Thomas Robinson, quienes también enfrentan cargos por delitos graves, se asociaron en el negocio de la cocaína en 2023, según los fiscales. Ambos comenzaron a comprar cantidades cada vez mayores a Abbatiello.

Agostino Abbatiello, 24, allegedly ran a drug-trafficking network involving students at Pennsylvania State University.
Abbatiello was arrested and charged with being the alleged ringleader of a cocaine-trafficking organization that included members of local fraternities, organizations found on numerous U.S. college campuses.
In the United States, some fraternities are known for subjecting prospective members to initiation rituals known as hazing. But instead of alcohol-related challenges, prosecutors allege that Abbatiello forced recruits to cut, process and package cocaine.
A total of 13 current and former students were charged with being part of the cocaine-trafficking network.
A 14th defendant, the father of a student, faces charges of tampering with evidence and obstructing the investigation.
In comments to the JMH International Consortium of Journalists, sources at Pennsylvania State University expressed dismay over the allegations involving current and former students.
“Criminal activities, including hazing, have no place at our institution, and we will cooperate with law enforcement in every way we can,” Andrea Dowhower, vice president for Student Affairs, said in a statement to JMH.
Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities under scrutiny
Prosecutors allege that the defendants used applications such as Snapchat and the digital wallet Venmo. Usernames linked to their real identities eventually helped authorities identify them.
According to the indictment, they recruited fraternity members and forced some prospective members to cut and package cocaine.
“There was nothing childish or adolescent about this type of conduct,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday said when announcing the charges.
“This was a high-level organization operating in this region of Pennsylvania,” he added.
According to the grand jury report, members of Delta Upsilon sold cocaine to one another and obtained the drugs directly from Abbatiello, a member of Sigma Chi.
Abbatiello obtained drugs from a Pennsylvania dealer he knew, Lars Zeepvat, also a Sigma Chi member and one of the defendants, according to the report.
When that cocaine supply ran out, Abbatiello allegedly sought a new supplier and found one in his hometown of New York, who, according to the indictment, supplied them with larger quantities of cocaine.
After that, according to the report, Zeepvat noticed “a change in Abbatiello” and realized that he was now selling drugs for profit rather than obtaining them for himself and a few friends.
According to the report, Zeepvat said Abbatiello had asked whether he “wanted to make money and help him distribute cocaine.”
It was not long before Zeepvat and another student involved in the drug trade accompanied Abbatiello to collect drugs or drove to “buy large quantities.”
“They drove to a location at an address provided by Abbatiello, a man handed them a bag containing cocaine (...) and they returned with the bag to the university to give it to Abbatiello,” the report says.
Pennsylvania’s student drug network
Two Delta Upsilon members, Mohammed Huraibi and Thomas Robinson, who also face felony charges, joined the cocaine business in 2023, prosecutors said. Both began buying increasingly larger quantities from Abbatiello.
By late 2023, “several prospective Delta Upsilon members were used to package the drugs into half-gram bags for sale,” the report says.
The attorney general described “a pattern of events demonstrating that cutting and packaging cocaine was, for some prospective members, a form of indoctrination into the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities.”
By the fall of 2024, the network, which had begun with a few fraternity members selling cocaine among themselves, was flourishing. Robinson and Abbatiello were allegedly recruiting additional helpers, according to the report.
Friends and fraternity associates helped with packaging, delivery and distribution.
According to the documents, a confidential informant told police that a man known by the nickname “T-Rob” had been selling cocaine from the Delta Upsilon fraternity house and accepting Venmo payments under the username “Tom-Robinson.”
Authorities quickly traced the operation to the Pennsylvania State University student, and police later searched his room at Delta Upsilon.
Robinson thought it was a prank, disobeyed police orders and was shocked with a Taser.
After being arrested and questioned, Robinson identified Abbatiello as his supplier. From there, the investigation began to unravel the network.
Pennsylvania State University announced that Delta Upsilon faces a provisional suspension. Sigma Chi operates outside the university’s oversight.
